It's been a minute. The last two months were a mix of mess, anxiety, deceptions, quality time with my loved ones, clarity, and a much-needed reset in my home country. I wasn't in a place where I felt motivated to share daily adventures on this platform, and while the Instagram algorithm might not like it, I'm okay with that. I took time to reflect on the previous year's up and downs and write down my expectations for the new one. And as the temperatures are dropping here, I get ready for winter adventures. Here is a list of my expectations for this winter:
These photos reflect the beauty and peacefulness of this place. They reflect our feeling of serenity while witnessing the changing colors of the surrounding peaks, the stillness of the alpine lake, or the giantness of the glacier overlooking us. What they don't show, though, are the candid and imperfect moments when I don't even think to grab my camera. The joy of reunion with my friend I hadn't seen in months. Watching the stars and trying to figure out their names. Playing cards in the tent and losing. Waking up to her grumpy face because she forgot her sleeping mat. Debating the best approach to our objective peak. Triggering a rock fall that almost hit her, recognizing the fear on her face and deciding happily to turn back. Chickening out because the lake is too cold to swim and enjoying the sun hitting us.
When I applied to be a mentor in the @mountain.mentors program, I was asked what were my motivations to become a mentor. I knew what I wanted for my future mentee: to be encouraged, to learn in a supportive environment, to gain confidence and to feel they belong in the outdoor space. I wanted so badly to give them what I truly missed when I started adventuring out there many years ago: a sense of community. Then I realised I was looking for the exact same things as a mentor.
It is time to slow down and reflect. A time of year when I can sometimes be disoriented after the summer rush. As a dreamer and disorganized person, I often feel like time has slipped away. I find myself looking at the calendar and saying, "no way, we are already halfway through the month."
Cheers to the many more mountains I'll climb with you.
Last week's sunny afternoon in the alpine.
A special day in the alpine. Epic views, tons of blueberries, no other human around, blue lakes and cold dips. October treats us well so far.
A rest day between a kayaking trip and a hike on Vancouver Island. I often forget about these in-between days, when I have nothing planned, nor work to do, and no expectations. I know I have a problem with trying to fit in as many adventures as possible in a short time, and I get frustrated when I don't get to cross things out of my bucket list. When I take days off and go explore, I want every day to be defined with a purpose: a view to see, a mountain to hike, a route to paddle, or a new experience. If the purpose was to only enjoy the present, I would have found the secret of happiness. But I'm not there yet. In the meantime, I try to cherish these little unexpected moments in between.
Being on top of a mountain is a thrilling emotion. Some go for the breathtaking views. Others for the adrenaline, the rush of overlooking the world beneath you. The sense of achievement, the pride of climbing as high as possible. Others do it for the workout or to spend memorable times with friends.
