Winter Hike to Wedgemount Lake

I climbed for what seemed like hours, snow lashing my face. When I looked up, I saw it: this sparkling blue glacier looming before my tired eyes.

Happy birthday to my favorite human. ❤️
Happy International Women's Day!
When life gets tricky, I go up to the mountains. When I start worrying about my future, feel I have no control, wonder what I'm doing here, and doubt if I will ever belong here. Up there, watching sunrise or sunset, looking at the stars at night, or playing in the snow all day, I forget all the nonsense I'm dealing with down here. Everything makes sense again, I feel refreshed, and more importantly, I remember why I'm here. And somewhat, I know I belong.
That night, we got out of our tents in the cold (-12°C), and slowly snowshoed up in the dark so we could witness sunrise on the top of a mountain. That's what winter adventures are all about. Harsh, demanding, unforgiving. Inspiring, empowering, and worth all the trouble.
If you swipe, you'll see one of the most iconic viewpoints of BC. I never visited this place in summer, but I heard about how the trail is packed with people and how it negatively impacts the area. Since I arrived in BC three years ago, I have wanted to hike Panorama ridge and witness that beauty for myself. But I refused to go in summer and wanted to wait for the *perfect* weather window: when the mountain is covered in snow and the lake isn't frozen yet. That morning when these pics were taken, my friend @saklinkow and I were the only ones up there waiting for sunrise, making that moment so special. It was definitely worth the three years wait.
It's been a minute. The last two months were a mix of mess, anxiety, deceptions, quality time with my loved ones, clarity, and a much-needed reset in my home country. I wasn't in a place where I felt motivated to share daily adventures on this platform, and while the Instagram algorithm might not like it, I'm okay with that. I took time to reflect on the previous year's up and downs and write down my expectations for the new one. And as the temperatures are dropping here, I get ready for winter adventures. Here is a list of my expectations for this winter:
These photos reflect the beauty and peacefulness of this place. They reflect our feeling of serenity while witnessing the changing colors of the surrounding peaks, the stillness of the alpine lake, or the giantness of the glacier overlooking us. What they don't show, though, are the candid and imperfect moments when I don't even think to grab my camera. The joy of reunion with my friend I hadn't seen in months. Watching the stars and trying to figure out their names. Playing cards in the tent and losing. Waking up to her grumpy face because she forgot her sleeping mat. Debating the best approach to our objective peak. Triggering a rock fall that almost hit her, recognizing the fear on her face and deciding happily to turn back. Chickening out because the lake is too cold to swim and enjoying the sun hitting us.
When I applied to be a mentor in the @mountain.mentors program, I was asked what were my motivations to become a mentor. I knew what I wanted for my future mentee: to be encouraged, to learn in a supportive environment, to gain confidence and to feel they belong in the outdoor space. I wanted so badly to give them what I truly missed when I started adventuring out there many years ago: a sense of community. Then I realised I was looking for the exact same things as a mentor.
